Quote for the Day:

"Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So... get on your way."~ Dr. Seuss

I was born in Oakland, California and at the age of six my family moved to St. Louis, Missouri. In the first grade, I sold my first painting from a group show. It was one of many family portraits I painted, my world as the youngest of seven children. I think, in some way, I'm still painting that portrait, only my sense of family is more largely defined.

When I turned twenty, I moved back to Oakland to attend art school at California College of the Arts (then CCAC) and completed my BFA with an emphasis in painting, printmaking and textile arts. During my studies, I was greatly influenced by the Etruscans as well as the Expressionists.

By and by, artists such as Leon Golub, Jacob Lawrence, Max Beckmann and Romare Bearden began to resonate. Photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, and Diane Arbus opened my eyes. The vast swirl of words from the Sufi poetry of Kabir to contemporary writers and poets like Don DeLillo, Jeanette Winterson, Alice Walker and Toni Morrison sparked my fire. Artists who capture a simple moment, thought, gesture of the ordinary and mundane but suggest the extraordinary and mysterious sanctuary that lies beneath the surface. This contemplation is my constant source material.

My process is very stream-of-consciousness. Simple images and bits of words converge as memory, metaphor and metaphysics onto my canvas and become part of life's family portrait.

I have had numerous solo shows in California and have been featured in group exhibitions in Germany and Japan.

Likely or unlikely stories. We are all writing the narrative of our lives. One step at a time. One-way streets, back alleys, sprawling boulevards, rocky trails take us to and through our destinies. Do we turn left? Do we turn right? Each intersection decides our next paragraph, beginning or ending of a chapter. Sometimes, detours are necessary. Choices are made that sketch us into the world; we add color, texture, layers and become someone.
We become other than we had planned or imagined ourselves to be. Change course, reinvent. Engage in unexpected acts. Commune with an often times unanticipated cast of characters in the theater of life.

In the urban environment, one collects myriad sensory input, bumping into or intentionally interfacing with the intermittent and contrary forces of nature: hot and cold, creative and destructive, delightful and disturbing, substantive and hollow, resilience and frailty. Balancing the Shiva/Shakti principle, we navigate the dichotomy of the human experience.  We carry on.

Who are we. What stories do we have to tell. Or not tell. Cry out, stay silent. Sing your truth. Clarity, shadow, honesty, pretense. Likely or unlikely, we create our urban stories. And hopefully, like the lotus, we all float lightly in beauty amidst the muddy waters, come what may.
